Statement

We have prepared a statement about the LP research to get signatories from a number of professors and medical doctors.  The list is growing but the more we have the more weight this will carry.  So if you know of anybody who would add their signature to this, please ask them - the statement is at the end of this email so you can send it to them for their consideration.

Websites

The PR company has also given us detailed feedback on our websites which would be useful for you to consider in light of your own, as each website reflects on the LP and you should get more traffic of those interested in the LP after the programme.  If you visited the websites recently you may have noticed major changes.  They suggested the website should be:

  • Very clear and easy to navigate

  • Imagery should be one that is professional and clinical, avoiding anything that looks like alternative health.

  • Address the points the BBC is likely to make so that the visitor will get the key facts quickly.

We've taken this on board and over the Christmas and new year period I spent many hours rebuilding the website to reflect this - removing most of the imagery that we had originally used and reducing the amount of pages and click-throughs.  We've also changed the menus to address the key points that we think the BBC will be trying to put across. These are:

  • There is research backing the lightning process.

  • It is recommended and supported by doctors and researchers.

  • It has helped so many people.

  • It is not suitable for everybody.

  • We are a professional reputable body that is accountable.

  • We have worked successfully with long COVID and there is research to support this.

Social Media

They also gave us extensive feedback on social media and we have changed the descriptions of our social media feeds and imagery to match the websites. Again, if you've been to the social media platforms you may have noticed this.  One decision I made was to close my Twitter account - it was a very popular account with over 13,000 followers but was quite often a toxic environment and, with the strange and worrying views of Mr Musk,  it just felt the easiest way to deal with this particular platform.

This is only a fraction of the work they have carried out - they have also been developing testimonies and articles for the newspapers.

How to Respond to Comments

One other point that might be valuable - they have suggested some responses to social media and suggest that when the programme is broadcast, temporarily turning off comments on the most toxic platforms like Twitter and YouTube might be a good thing.

Prepared messages for social media:  Below the PR company have prepared social media statements for Head Office to use in the following two scenarios:

1. Genuine interest/questions/information requests

2. Criticism

Scenario One: Genuine interest/questions/information requests

  • "Thanks so much for getting in touch. You can find out more about the Lightning Process on our website, including research, FAQs and stories from people who have found it helped them: https://lightningprocess.com. You can also find our contact details if you would like to discuss the process with one of our team.”

  • “Thanks so much for your support [and for sharing your story]. It is always wonderful to hear that our work is having a positive impact on people. It’s why we do what we do!”  - This response can be altered more in line with what the person has written, though keep short, sweet, generic and don’t invite too much wider discussion. If you do wish to connect with them, do so privately on DMs for the time being or ask them to contact you – it will prevent negative posters from jumping on their threads.

Scenario One: Criticism

  • The LP is a brain-mind-body training program designed to help individuals address chronic conditions by influencing their health and well-being. It is grounded in research-based principles, with randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews demonstrating its effectiveness. And this research supports the experiences of thousands of participants have reported significant improvements in their lives.

We recognise that everyone’s perspective is unique, and we encourage anyone interested in learning more to explore the research and testimonials available on our website here: https://lightningprocess.com/. If you have specific questions, feel free to reach out directly to our team.”

  • Short version: "We appreciate your feedback. The Lightning Process (LP) is a brain-mind-body training program aimed at improving well-being and addressing chronic conditions. While it’s not for everyone, many have reported life-changing results. Learn more or explore the research: https://lightningprocess.com/."

Additions:

  • If specific misinformation is raised, the response can include: "We’ve noticed some misunderstandings about [the LP and its methodology] [and research]. To clarify, [insert brief factual correction]. You can learn more about this topic here: [link]."

  • If the criticism is aggressive or unconstructive, a firm but polite boundary is appropriate: "We’re committed to respectful and constructive conversations. If you have specific concerns, please contact us directly using the contact form at [email/contact link]."

Avoid engaging further if the critic persists in hostility. Stick to the preprepared message and disengage.

Why this works:

  • Professional and Respectful Tone: Avoids defensiveness or hostility, even in the face of harsh criticism.

  • Focus on the Positive: Highlights the benefits and credibility of the Lightning Process without being overly promotional.

  • Deflects to Factual Resources: Directs critics to research or a FAQ page where they can find more detailed information, avoiding prolonged debates.

  • Acknowledges Different Perspectives: Shows understanding and openness without conceding to unsubstantiated criticism.

  • Encourages Constructive Engagement: Offers a way to reach out privately, steering potential conflicts away from public threads.

Support for the Evidence-Based Research on the Lightning Process: A Letter from Academics and Medical Professionals

To Whom It May Concern:

As academics and medical doctors who have reviewed the research on the Lightning Process (LP), we offer this letter of support for the approach.

The LP is a brain-mind-body training programme that has shown promising results in helping people with a variety of health conditions.

Research has shown that the LP is effective in improving physical function, fatigue, anxiety, and depression in adolescents with CFS/ME. A randomised controlled trial found that adolescents who received the LP in addition to Specialist Medical Care had statistically significantly better outcomes at 6 and 12 months than those who received SMC alone.

Three case reports have been published on the use of the LP to help those with Long Covid. All three patients reported improvements in fatigue, a range of physical symptoms and well-being after treatment and at follow-up.

A pilot study also found that the LP statistically significantly reduced fatigue in young cancer survivors and the changes were maintained at 6 months.

A systematic review of the LP was published in 2020. It evaluated 14 studies (ten quantitative studies/surveys and four qualitative studies) and noted that all studies evidenced a level of benefit from the intervention, commonly for the majority of participants.

Importantly, research has also shown that the LP is safe. The randomised controlled trial of adolescents with CFS/ME found no serious adverse events attributable to the LP.

While more research is needed, the existing evidence suggests that the LP is a promising intervention that may be helpful for people with a variety of health conditions.
